Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the
order Proboscides. Two species are traditionally recognized, the African elephant and the Asian
elephant, although some evidence suggests that elephants and African forest elephants are
separate species. Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South
Asia, and Southeast
